Dopo ogni seminario si riflette, sia da fruitori sia da relatori. Da entrambe le parti si impara qualcosa, e quindi ci si chiede cosa.

Anche il recente seminario sul Canto Difonico inserito nell’ambito della 13° Rassegna Musica Diversa – Omaggio a Demetrio Stratos mi ha fatto riflettere, perlomeno per la parte di apertura che mi ha riguardato:

uno degli errori in cui rischio sempre di incorrere è dare per scontato che chi ascolta abbia una concezione di suono vocale simile alla mia; quando si parla di armonici e formanti non è raro notare la perplessità di qualcuno.  Idem quando si illustrano immagini o video delle componenti fisiche dell’apparato fonatorio.

Ma come, parliamo di suono innanzitutto, dovremmo conoscerne acusticamente e matematicamente la struttura, e la sua fisiologia.

Eppure generalmente queste informazioni sono sconosciute ai più, ma poco male, siamo lì per questo.

Il mio sforzo è e sarà sempre quello di cercare di trovare dei punti di accordo tra la concezione artistica dell’emissione vocale e quella fisiologica. E’ noto come purtroppo molto spesso non vi sia buon dialogo tra il foniatra e l’insegnante di canto operistico, uno ancorato a dati scientifici, l’altro alle proprie sensazioni propriocettive.

Il foniatra non è un cantante, si dice, per cui si basa su dati fisici e anatomici, non certo su proprie sensazioni propriocettive maturate sul campo; al contrario l’insegnante di canto utilizza molto spesso il proprio orecchio per riconoscere la bontà e la qualità del suono emesso dall’allievo, e ne chiede la focalizzazione psico-sensoriale per poi poter riprodurre quel medesimo suono in futuro.

Quando illustro a video e spiego qualche sonogramma vocale tramite software dedicato noto in alcuni volti lo stupore per aver scoperto qualcosa di impensabile e misterioso, ma questo cosa sta dicendo, fantastico, …

Ciò è normale, però conosco molti artisti lirici e overtone singers che praticano la loro arte senza un approfondimento di certe conoscenze, altri ne sono del tutto ignari. Non credo che la conoscenza della teoria formantica o della teoria mioelastica siano indispensabili – basti pensare a certi grandi cantanti d’opera di inizio secolo scorso – ma credo che potrebbero aiutare ad aumentare la consapevolezza e l’intenzionalità di ciò che si intende trasmettere con la propria voce.

Questa iniziativa è appena nata per cui contiamo sull’interesse e la curiosità di quante più persone possibili.

Dopo una chiaccherata/riflessione – di fronte a un buon bicchiere di acqua fresca rigorosamente liscia – sulla solita ottusità culturale tutta italiana, Roberto Laneri e Marco Tonini decidono di provare anche questa strada.

Obiettivo del network Canto Armonico è divulgare quanto più possibile la cultura – e la pratica – del canto armonico nel nostro paese attraverso l’intervento di chi se ne occupa, …

ovvero appassionati, praticanti, esperti di acustica, fisioacustica, psicoacustica e fonetica, foniatri, logopedisti, musicisti, etnomusicologi, compositori, tutti operanti sul nostro terrirorio, ma soprattutto curiosi interessati a capire di che si tratta.

In Italia vi è un certo fermento culturale sulla pratica del canto armonico, sicuramente non attivo e incisivo come a noi piacerebbe. Questo network vuole essere un punto d’incontro per condividere esperienze, promuovere iniziative, nel tentativo di apprendere, affinare ed espandere quanto più possibile nel nostro paese la conoscenza di questo corpus di tecniche vocali.

Qui nessuno ha il ruolo di maestro, chi è in grado donerà e condividerà le proprie conoscenze ed esperienze, altri le assorbiranno e ne chiederanno altre per meglio comprendere e capire questo mondo ancora poco conosciuto nel nostro paese.

By this toy you can control a little ball using brain waves.

Looking at some videos, I see that people can control only the up-down movements of the ball, no other. Not only, really do you think  to be able to control a ball like a Jedi Knight?

I think you control not the ball, but an air fan (as explained on the second video). Maybe the EEG data are sent to an air fan, so more brain activity is the equivalent of more air flux, and vice versa. Lateral movements are controlled by a knob.

This is my opinion, but I learn from my mistakes.

Da qualche anno si legge in rete di questa Rivoluzione Omega. A prescindere che non condivido molto il termine rivoluzione, devo dire che condivido pienamente l’obiettivo di riportare (leggi qui) il diapason a 432 Hz.

La Rivoluzione Omega parte da osservazioni di tale Ananda Bosman, riunite in seguito in un testo che troviamo tradotto in italiano …

Sinceramente, condividendo gli obiettivi, trovo il testo un pò troppo new-ageiano per i miei gusti, e confesso di non aver minimamente compreso molti concetti espressi.

Molto in sintesi si afferma la disarmonicità della frequenza 440 rispetto ad assiomi filosofico-matematci che regolano l’universo così come lo conosciamo. Sarebbe quindi una frequenza di riferimento – diapason – perfettamente arbitraria. Vengono quindi prese in esame una serie di motivazioni per cui, al contrario, si dovrebbe considerare il diapason a 432 Hz come matematicamente più naturale.

Interessanti alcuni riferimenti, troviamo molti riferimenti storici, matematici e geometrici, ovviamente, dalla Proporzione Aurea al Triangolo di Sierpinski, dalla progressione di Fibonacci alla doppia elica del DNA, …

Ho riscontrato anche alcune imprecisioni su come sono stati espressi alcuni concetti di acustica ma, ripeto, o sono stati tradotti non correttamente o proprio li ho fraintesi.

Avverto che la forma del trattato è a mio avviso un pò stravagante e non di immediata comprensione. In effetti non ho ancora compreso molto di ciò che vuole esprimere.

Consequently the lyrics are only of secondary importance – the rhythm in the song is the most important aspect and the rhythm takes precedence over the rhythm and stresses of the Gaelic. The lyrics in puirt (plural of the word port = dance tune) are generally meaningless or nonsensical. Many Gaelic singers therefore do not believe in publishing translations of puirt-a-beul. … The origins of puirt are unclear and may have resulted from the banning of pipes after the 1745 uprising, or the religious opposition to musical instruments (at its height in the mid-19th century). It is important to realise how interwoven is with both fiddling and various forms of dance – the song, tune and dance all go together as an entity. … In Cape Breton there is a dance and puirt about a loom weaving. In this dance, the dancers are squatted or crouched and leap up to simulate the rise and fall of the harnesses on the loom, whilst others weave in and out to indicate the shuttle flying back and forth. In Cape Breton also, people perform step dances around a row of lighted candles, which they extinguish one by one with the soles of their feet while dancing.

The term sonic boom is commonly used to refer to the shocks caused by the supersonic flight of an aircraft. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion. Thunder is a type of natural sonic boom, created by the rapid heating and expansion of air in a lightning discharge.
When an object passes through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot “get out of the way” of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound.
This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level at room temperature.

Calling you (Bagdad Cafè soundtrack) is one of my preferred songs. It moves me to tears each time I hear it, like few other ballads (A salty dog, The great gig in the sky, …).

Maybe this is in relation with my memories or with my mood…

I don’t like very much the interpretation of Javetta Steele (original version) …

… I preferr the Barbra Streisand, Holly Cole and Giorgia versions, but there was a divine relation when this song and a heavenly voice merged, so I found a studio version and a live version by the great Jeff!

In my opinion we must distinguish two meants about overtone singing:

1 – overtones singing for inner search, inner peace, and so on…
2 – overtones singing for acoustic beauty only

I am for the first category, I don’t understand the second, however I often try to join them in a unique mental condition.

I think that David Hykes follows this idea; he owns a great technique, but I know this is not his goal. He doesn’t waste time to show us his ability, he tries to use these sounds to touch soul and mind, to obtain an inner harmony of human being.

My aim and inspiration was to bring to life a new, global sacred music emanating from this most basic music universal – the harmonic series – present in all vocal or instrumental sound. The harmonic series is to sound what the color spectrum is to light.    –  David Hykes

David founded the Harmonic Choir in 1975 and he was the founder of the Harmonic Presence Foundation in 1981. The Harmonic Choir is a vocal ensemble (2 – 10 elements), clever at creating an ample range of consonant/dissonant sonorities, working with overtones, sometimes playing with rhythmical movements. I was enchanted by his choral use of voices, without digital effects. All natural.

Hearing Solar Winds, my favourite cd – now in Special 25th Anniversary Remastered edition, offers some particular examples. It is a continuous piece in 8 sections. It contains a mix of vanishing vocal chords,  overtones, no words, no noise, only pure sounds with a large natural reverb.

The cd is not for free, so – under licence from David – I suggest for you only few seconds of Arc Descents, a section very impressive for me. In the second half  it reminds me of Shepard Scale effect.

Shepard Scale is a kind of acoustic illusion; it is an apparently endless glissando (or a scale), in which – in our case – higher harmonics are  re-entered gradually while lower harmonics are fading. As result you can hear a descending lower  pitch, without end, like a circle. If you want, read wikipedia about it.

The relation is very clear (not the mechanism).

Attention please, this short extract is an example only, it doesn’t allow us to absorb completely the effects of <David Hykes and Harmonic Choir> amazing sound world.

In my opinion, to benefit as much as possible from this music you must listen to the entire cd, or at least each entire movement; so for my mind it is the only way to take part in a mix of astral travels and undefined sensations.

Only my music – and music of other few friends – give me the same results.

This is a great composition.

I love very long reverbs.

There are several videos on Youtube about vocal resonances of this baptistry in Pisa, so I think: is it very famous for its acoustic feature?

In all videos I have seen, the guards sing major triads (IV-I-V et similia).

Dr Julian McGlashan from Queens Medical Center in Nottingham presenting a part of a research study made in cooperation with Cathrine Sadolin and Henrik Kjelin from Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen.

The presentation is from Pevoc7 (7th Pan European Voice Conference) in Groningen, August 2007, where a huge interest lead to an improvised change of schedule so this presentation could be repeated for everyone at the conference.
