Baby monitors of the future could translate infant cries, so that parents will know for certain whether their child is sleepy, hungry, needing a change, or in pain. Japanese scientists report details of a statistical computer program that can analyze a baby’s crying in the International Journal of Biometrics.

As any new parent knows, babies have a very loud method of revealing their emotional state – crying. Unfortunately, the parenting handbook does not offer guidance on how to determine what the crying means. Parents sometimes learn with experience that their child’s cries may be slightly different depending on their cause, whether hunger or discomfort…

Now, engineers in Japan have turned to an approach to product design, known as kansei engineering, invented in the 1970s by Professor Mitsuo Nagamachi, Dean of Hiroshima International University, which aims to “measure” feelings and emotions.

Tomomasa Nagashima of the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, at Muroran Institute of Technology, in Hokkaido and colleagues explain that the fundamental problem in building an emotion detector for baby’s crying is that the baby cannot confirm verbally what its cries mean. Various researchers have tried to classify infant emotions based on an analysis of the crying pattern but with little success so far.

The team has employed sound pattern recognition approach that uses a statistical analysis of the frequency of cries and the power function of the audio spectrum to classify different types of crying. They were then able to correlate the different recorded audio spectra with a baby’s emotional state as confirmed by the child’s parents. In their tests recordings of crying babies with a painful genetic disorder, were used to make differentiating between the babies’ pained cries and other types of crying more obvious. They achieved 100% success rate in a validation to classify pained cries and “normal” cries.

The research has developed a sound theoretical method for classification of infant emotions, although limited to a specific emotion, based on analysis of the audio spectra of the baby’s cries. The technique might one day be incorporated into a portable electronic device, or app, to help parents or carers decide on a course of action when their child is crying.

Undici brani (6 con 6 diversi didjeridoo, 2 con le koncovka, 1 con la fujara, 1 con la dan-moi vietnamita e armonici vocali e 1 con solo voce difonica) per circa un ora e mezza di musica.

Sarà un vero e proprio percorso auditivo/visivo che proporrò, cercando di disegnare sul momento la musica che voglio far sentire…

Disegnare perchè proietterò (4mt x 3) in diretta, mediante un software di analisi dello spettro delle frequenze settato in modo particolare, i disegni dei suoni armonici strumentali e vocali che produrrò.
La serata si terrà nella splendida cornice del cortile interno del Palazzo dei Principi di Correggio e farà parte della rassegna “notti di musica ed immagini” curata dal comune della mia città.

A questo punto anticipo la domanda rituale che è nell’aria, e che riguarda gli effetti di questa pratica. In altre parole, che cosa fa il canto armonico a chi lo pratica e in minor misura a chi lo ascolta?

Se vogliamo, la difficoltà di rispondere a questa domanda sta nel fatto che il canto armonico serve, o può servire, a tantissime cose. Io stesso, che lo pratico dal 1972, ne scopro ogni giorno di nuove. Ad esempio anni fa fui invitato in Spagna a tenere un workshop i cui partecipanti erano una ventina di astrologi, dai quali ho imparato che esiste un branca dell’astrologia che si chiama astrologia armonica e che calcola le posizioni armoniche dei pianeti, oltre alla posizioni fondamentali…

Se pensiamo allo zodiaco come ad un cerchio di 360 gradi, e se ad esempio in un oroscopo il sole si trova a zero gradi in ariete, la seconda posizione armonica dello stesso astro verrebbe a trovarsi a 180 gradi dalla prima (zero gradi in bilancia).
Tra le applicazioni pratiche, ve ne sono ovviamente di tipo musicale. Accenno solo brevemente al fatto, di cui qualsiasi tipo di composizione che voglia utilizzare queste tecniche dovrebbe tener conto, che nel mondo del canto armonico il sistema temperato non esiste, in quanto gli armonici hanno un altro sistema di relazioni sonore secondo intervalli naturali puri, corrispondenti alla divisione per numeri interi di un’ipotetica corda vibrante (ovvero: “just intonation without even trying”—intonazione naturale senza nemmeno tentare).
Vi sono poi una serie di applicazioni di tipo conoscitivo (una sorta di jñana yoga, o yoga della conoscenza), oppure di tipo psicologico-sociale (il relazionarsi in un modo certamente diverso dalle solite interazioni personali che ha luogo quando un gruppo di persone scelgono di cantare insieme, esercitando quello che Joscelyn Godwin ha chiamato “the musical birthright of us all”—il diritto originario alla musica di ciascuno di noi).
Rientrano nel campo della fisiologia effetti come “l’effetto Tomatis”, vale a dire l’effetto di “ricarica della corteccia cerebrale” attivato dalle frequenze tra i 900 e i 3000 hertz (secondo Alfred Tomatis, ma… provare per credere), e che finalmente fa un po’ di chiarezza nel campo assai poco chiaro dei cosiddetti suoni di trance e suoni di estasi, di cui parla ad esempio la tradizione Sufi.
Al di là e prima ancora di qualsiasi applicazione pratica l’effetto più importante del canto armonico è quello di un grande aiuto a fermare il cosiddetto “dialogo mentale”, il costante chiacchiericcio della mente che è l’ostacolo più grande al suo funzionamento e che la rende simile ad una radio mal sintonizzata. I neurofisiologi contemporanei sono tutti d’accordo sul fatto che il cervello sfrutti una piccola parte delle sue potenzialità, per la precisione dal 5 al 15 per cento. Tutto questo era già noto a Patanjali (terzo secolo a.C.?), il quale nei suoi Yogasutra lo afferma a chiarissime lettere: “Lo yoga è l’arresto delle funzioni mentali”, laddove per funzioni mentali si intende la congerie di pensieri irrilevanti, incontrollati e incontrollabili che premono sulla soglia della coscienza.
Quando si riesce a stare nel vuoto mentale, la percezione con le sue illusioni si pulisce automaticamente (vedi William Blake: “The doors of perception they be cleansed”). Ho l’impressione che la percezione umana nel corso della storia sia andata mano a mano degradando. La vera tragedia della percezione, di cui l’ascolto è soltanto una parte, si può ascrivere al fatto che nel mondo occidentale, all’incirca dal ‘700, la percezione ufficiale si è limitata al mondo materiale, escludendo tutto il resto, tutte le zone di confine. Inutile dire che questo paradigma rovinoso non solo è stato poi imposto al resto del mondo, ma ci impedisce di fatto di capire veramente qualsiasi manifestazione artistica e spirituale che ad esso non si conformi. Prendiamo ad esempio l’arte aborigena australiana, che è fatta quasi soltanto di due cose, e cioè di reticoli e di punti. Un’interpretazione puramente estetica di questi segni, che vorrebbe gli aborigeni precursori di Braque e Seurat, non ne coglie la vera natura, che è in primo luogo descrizione precisa della realtà percepita sotto forma di patterns di energia.
Quindi addentrarsi nel mondo degli armonici significa risolvere una volta per tutte l’insensata dicotomia materia/spirito. Citando il maestro Sufi Pir Vilayat Khan, con cui ho avuto l’onore di lavorare per parecchio tempo, si può definire la materia come spirito solidificato e lo spirito come materia rarefatta.

Now look at this:

It’s the same waveform zoom in at 12 milliseconds; you note the irregularity of wave and its spectrogram.

Another picture:

This is 1 second sawtooth at 1500 Hz (or CPS, Cycles Per Second); it means 1500 crests waveform in 1 second. In this image you can’t see them because 1500 crests in few centimeters are very constrict, so:

The same waveform with zoom in. Now you can see the crests (crest= section of the wave that rises above the 0 line position); you can count 15 of them in 10 milliseconds, 1500 Hz : 1 second = 15 Hz : 10 milliseconds.
Here the spectrogram represents a series of lines, the harmonics, each one at the same distance.

In this way you can understand that:

1 – noise hasn’t got an exact frequency, its spectrogram is irregular, this sound is enharmonics, its crests are irregular

2 – frequency (Hz) represents the repetitions number of crest in 1 second; frequency is closely connected to the pitch of a sound.

3 – if a wave is periodic (regular repetion of crest), probably has got harmonic components.

4 – if a wave is not periodic, it has got enharmonic components (for example gong, noise, handmade bells).

so:

5 – a periodic wave produce a pitch sensation.

6 – the pitch sensation is not so definite if the wave periodicity is less regular.

7 – harmonics are all multiples of fundamental frequency (called F0 or h1 or 1° harmonic component)

A nice aspect is the relation among octave intervals; now we consider an harmonic sound at 100 Hz, it is create by:

h1 (1° harmonic component) or F0 (fundamental frequency) = 100 Hz

h2 = 200 Hz

h3 = 300 Hz

and so on, but the 1° octave is 200 Hz, the 2° octave is 200*2=400 Hz, the 3° octave is 800 Hz, the 4° octave is 1600 Hz.
These are all octave intervals, 100 Hz and 200 Hz, but 800 Hz and 1600 Hz too (or 10.000 Hz and 20.000 Hz).

What does it means?

Our auditory perception rates the ratio among frequencies, not the frequencies.
So we always perceive the same interval only if the ratio among frequencies is steady (in this case ratio 2:1).

FFT – Fast Fourier Transform

By this theorem, each audio signal can be split in many harmonic components, each one with its frequency, amplitude and phase, as show in the upper images.
So we understand that each natural harmonic sound is the amount of many overtones, and the relation among their intensity fix our timbre perception.

There is a problem: if it is true, I could re-add harmonics to obtain the original sound, but the result can’t be the same, because each natural sound develops itself through time. For example it is impossible reproduce the sound of piano only re-adding its harmonic components because thay can’t reproduces the hammers sound, and second after second each harmonic can turn its amplitude or lenght.

The same things about voice.

By spettrograms and sonograms we can analyze all the harmonic or enharmonic components of a sound, but that’s not all. There are formants too.

Audacity – It is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds with the possibility to load VST effects. For win, mac and linux.

Baudline – It is a time-frequency browser designed for scientific visualization of the spectral domain. Signal analysis is performed by Fourier, correlation, and raster transforms that create colorful spectrograms with vibrant detail. Conduct test and measurement experiments with the built in function generator, or play back audio files with a multitude of effects and filters. The baudline signal analyzer combines fast digital signal processing, versatile high speed displays, and continuous capture tools for hunting down and studying elusive signal characteristics.
Excellent, for linux.

Madde – An additive, real-time, singing synthesiser by the great Svante Granqvist. We can create artificial vocal sounds and vowels manipulating overtones and formants. It’s fantastic.

Overtone Analyzer – thanks Maass and Saus, we all know it! It is in beta version now, but in the future we’ll must pay for it.

Praat – It is a program for speech analysis and synthesis written by Paul Boersma and David Weenink at the Department of Phonetics of the University of Amsterdam.
It is a research, publication, and productivity tool for phoneticians, for linux, mac, win.

Pure Data – Like Max/MSP, Pd is a “patcher” programming language, but Open Source. It is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM.
Pd was created to explore ideas of how to further refine the Max paradigm with the core ideas of allowing data to be treated in a more open-ended way and opening it up to applications outside of audio and MIDI, such as graphics and video.

Raven Lite – It is a free software program that lets users record, save, and visualize sounds as spectrograms and waveforms. Raven Lite is intended for students, educators, and hobbyists, and can be used for learning about sounds, as an aid in birdsong recognition, and in musical instruction.

Snd – complete sound editor. It currently runs on nearly all Unix-based systems, including Mac OSX and Cygwin. It might even run on others if the GUI support is omitted. It allows 3D sonograms.

Sonic Visualiser – The aim of Sonic Visualiser is to be the first program you reach for when want to study a musical recording rather than simply listen to it.
As well as a number of features designed to make exploring audio data as revealing and fun as possible, Sonic Visualiser also has powerful annotation capabilities to help you to describe what you find, and the ability to run automated annotation and analysis plugins in the Vamp analysis plugin format – as well as applying standard audio effects.
Sonic Visualiser will be of particular interest to musicologists, archivists, signal-processing researchers and anyone else looking for a friendly way to take a look at what lies inside the audio file.for linux, OS/X, and win.

Sonogram Visible Speech – Sonogram has been programmed at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (Deutsches Forschungszentrum fuer Kuenstliche Intelligenz DFKI, www.dfki.de), and is a 3D tool (it needs Java3D) to analyze speech and sound signals with FFT.

Speech Tools – You can use Speech Analyzer to do the following tasks:
perform fundamental frequency, spectrographic and spectral analysis, and duration measurements, add phonemic, orthographic, tone, and gloss transcriptions to phonetic transcriptions in an interlinear format, perform ethnomusicological analysis of music recordings, use slowed playback, repeat loops and overlays to assist with perception and mimicry of sounds for language learning.
It is very useful to formants analysis.

Visual Analyser – It is a complete professional real time software, transform your PC in a complete set of instruments; no new hardware necessary (you can use the Sound Card of your PC) or you can use a specific external hardware.

Wave Editor – Fast and easy digital audio editing software for Windows. It provides powerful and user-friendly editing environment which suits beginners especially and perform basic editing capabilities like: cut, copy, paste and delete parts of recording.

Wave Surfer – It is an Open Source tool for sound visualization and manipulation. It has been designed to suit both novice and advanced users. WaveSurfer has a simple and logical user interface that provides functionality in an intuitive way and which can be adapted to different tasks. It can be used as a stand-alone tool for a wide range of tasks in speech research and education. Typical applications are speech/sound analysis and sound annotation/transcription.
